Artonomy projects aims to empower young people to become autonomous artists through innovative and playful art workshops. Using process led approach we guide them to explore different art forms and processes.

From an early age we naturally explore the world around us through play, making sense and gaining understanding through interacting with different materials. Creating and making helps to continue to grow this natural instinct and in doing so develop our life skills.

Through structured projects, we invite young people to explore themes and ideas and to develop their own artistic responses. Over a series of sessions children are enabled to determine the pace of learning and feel ownership of their creativity. Children are encouraged to work towards a portfolio which can take various forms. This will be discussed with each child.

Session types:

  • Saturday sessions for children aged 5+

  • Art sessions for home-educated children - age 5+

  • Art sessions for age 11+

Who we are...

Sushila Pillai

I am a free-lance artist and educator. I have taught for many years across the curriculum in primary schools and for over 20 years I have home-educated my own children and have been an active member of the Leicester home-education community. I have organised and participated in a range of artistic projects for children within the home-education community, in school and in the wider community.

My main art practice is that of felt-making. I make conceptual work, large hangings and clothing. I sell my work through my business Felt4artsake, and show my work in exhibitions. I teach both adults and children the art of felt-making at my studio in Makers' Yard in Leicester's cultural quarter and at other venues by invitation.
